Sneaky peek: Bryan on the brain

Pete liked it this way. It was better.

I mean, not better exactly. But it was good. He was glad she had ended things. It was like Bryan always said: he was too young to get tied down. He should focus on his career first. Save up a bit of money.

He shook his head as he put his key in the car door. It let out an almighty creak as he opened it. He should put some WD40 on the hinges this weekend. The car groaned with his weight as he climbed in. The engined rumbled to life, resisting the minus-forty-degree weather. When Roxette’s ‘It Must Have Been Love’ blasted out of the car’s tinny speakers, he punched the radio buttons to choose a different station. He did not need that crap right now.

George Michael’s newest song, ‘Freedom’ – that was more like it.

He rubbed his hands together as he waited for the engine to heat up.

Mind you, if he saved up some money, he could get a newer car. Something cool. Bryan drove a Camaro, which was just about the coolest thing ever. It even had a CD player.

Pete looked over his shoulder before putting the car into reverse. The snow crunched under his tyres as he backed out of the spot. As he put the car into drive, a figure emerged from the shadows – someone on their way into station.

Was that Bryan? He wasn’t supposed to be working tonight, but maybe he’d taken someone else’s shift.

Pete tapped his horn. He waved, smiling at the figure. But when they turned to face him, it wasn’t Bryan. It was Jenny, the night shift custody sergeant. He cursed himself for his stupidity. Why had he thought it was Bryan? Blasted winter nights. Everyone was so bundled up you couldn’t tell anyone apart.

As he pulled his car out onto the road for the long drive home, he thought maybe he should do like Bryan did and date around. Bryan had a new girl every night of the week. But that would never work; Pete just wasn’t as good looking as Bryan.

Whatever. He didn’t need her. That was for sure.
