I love a bit of fictional AI as much as the next person
Okay, probably more than the next person.
Data, Marvin, Bender, Mike (aka Adam Selene), Mudd’s women, R Daneel Olivaw… You can see more examples in my own work: Henry, Holly, and Elys. Maybe more to come.
But I’m sceptical of real world AI. For one thing, I don’t think it can really do everything it’s being touted as doing. For another, behind the scenes, there are vulnerable people doing a lot of the work that’s touted as AI. So much we’re all of a sudden calling AI is just the same old automation we’ve been using for a decade or more.
There are legitimate things I think AI could and should be doing for the world. But, unfortunately, the billionaires would rather use AI to erase art, creativity, education, and office-based work.
In the words of fellow indie author, Joanna Maciejewska, ‘I want Al to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for Al to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes.’
Or to put my own spin on it, I want robots / AI that do the drudge work so I can focus on intellectual and creative pursuits.
For that reason, I do not and will not use AI to generate covers, text, or audio narration. Nor will you find any AI assistants on this website. No part of this website may be used for purposes of training LLM, machine learning, or AI models.
