Unexpected dragons, jaded dogs, and imaginary corpses

At the edge of the left-hand side of the window, I could see … something. ‘I’m not an expert on this stuff, you know. I can never even keep astronomy and astrology straight. Is that … a galaxy? A nebula? A constellation? An aurora? A comet? I don’t know.’ ‘I don’t actually have the data you’re seeking, I’m afraid,’ replied Holly – even though I had actually been talking to myself. ‘From my data banks, it does appear to be a nebula. The OED defines a nebula as a luminous patch made by a cluster of distant stars or by gaseous or stellar—‘ ‘Yeah, all right thanks. I wasn’t actually looking for an astrology lesson.’

Weird Christmas

Stone dragon on a bookshelfA few weeks before Christmas, there was a knock at my door. It was, as you might expect in 2020, a courier. But this delivery was an enormous, heavy cardboard box covered in stickers in Polish.

Erm… What?

As I dug through the mountains of styrofoam peanuts that filled the box, my mind was flooded with questions. Mainly: Did I accidentally buy a dragon from Poland?

And as you see to the left, it was indeed a dragon. Twelve kilograms of stone dragon-gargoyle (that’s more than 25 pounds if you’re American).

Erm… What?

And then the only possible answer dawned on me. My mother. This was indeed my Christmas gift from my mother. It’s lovely. Just … unexpected. And it does look great on my bookshelf behind me in meetings.

My latest work in progress is now called Left Hand of Dog. It’s progressing nicely. The little snippet of dialogue at the top of this mail is taken from the sixth chapter.

Book review: The Imaginary Corpse

The Imaginary Corpse by Tyler HayesDetective Tippy and his friends live in the Stillreal, where ideas go when they’re no longer needed. While solving a case about screaming corn, Tippy meets a new arrival — and soon finds himself sucked into a case big enough to change life in the Stillreal forever.

Part cosy mystery, part urban fantasy, part trippy-cheese-dream. But I feel like that sells this wonderful, unique story short.

Highly recommended. Get it now from Angry Robot.
